Astre of Douala will welcome Aigle Royal of Menoua this Wednesday in match day one of the 2023/24 MTN Elite One championship.

The fixture at the Douala Reunification stadium will revive one of the age-old rivalries between these with a long standing history in the Elite One championship – though they are yet to win it.

This Wednesday’s fixture will be a homecoming for coach Olivier Nankam who was in charge of Astres for over two seasons before switching and had some unforgettable moments with the Brazilians of Bepanda.

The 4pm kick-off at the home of Astre is an opportunity for coach Nankam and his peer, Agbor Ernest to showcase their know-how by getting off to a winning start this season.

Coach Agbor who also joined the Brazilians this season has a point to prove – having returned to Douala as head coach of the side his Union Sportive of Douala team tormented for years while he was settled in the town.

There’s no doubt in the fact that this game will be decided by the 22 players on the pitch, however the role of the two technicians on their respective dugout will be telling.

Players to watch

For Astres there will be particular attention on their exciting front line of newcomers Agbor Clinton and Corines Che alongside Ekoi Jonas who enters his second season at the club. The mobility capacity of the front men may turn out to be the main strength for coach Agbor Ernest this season.

Aigle Royal on their part have a talented group of players almost all at the same level, but coach Nankam is expected to galvanize his troops to deliver during their first outing of the season.
