Cameroon international André-Frank Zambo Anguissa was once again Napoli’s hero on Tuesday evening, heading home the decisive goal as the Italian champions battled to a 1–0 away win over US Lecce on Matchday 9 of the Serie A season.

The cagey encounter at the Stadio Ettore Giardiniero – Via del Mare saw both sides create openings, but it was Anguissa’s towering header in the 69th minute that settled matters. The midfielder timed his run perfectly to meet David Neres’ pinpoint cross, powering the ball past Lecce’s goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone to hand Napoli all three points.

Lecce could have changed the course of the match earlier when VAR awarded them a penalty in the 55th minute, but teenage forward Francesco Camarda saw his effort from the spot brilliantly saved by Vanja Milinković-Savić. That miss proved costly, as Napoli punished the hosts just moments later.

Statistically, the visitors were the more dominant side — finishing with 14 shots to Lecce’s 7, and 5 corners to 3. Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo and full-back Mathias Olivera also went close, but Anguissa’s clinical header proved enough.

The victory reinforces Napoli’s impressive early-season form, taking them to 21 points from 9 games and keeping them firmly at the top of the Serie A standings. For Lecce, the defeat leaves them on 6 points, still struggling to convert chances despite promising spells of play.

For Zambo Anguissa, it was another complete performance. The Indomitable Lion not only scored his fourth goal of the campaign, but also earned his fifth Player of the Match award this season — a testament to his consistency and growing leadership in the Napoli midfield.

The 28-year-old continues to be a driving force for the Partenopei, blending defensive discipline with attacking intent, and his contributions have been central to Napoli’s strong start to the season.

Napoli return home to face Torino at the weekend, while Lecce will travel to Empoli as they seek to rebound from Tuesday’s disappointment.
