Alex Song confirms retirement from football

Alexandre Dimitri Song Billong has officially announced his retirement from professional football.

The former gunners midfielder, who played for Arsenal, Barcelona and Rubin Kahzan confirmed the decision on Tuesday morning.

In a statement on Instagram, he said:

‘It is with great sadness that the time has come for me to hang up my boots.

“My journey that began in Yaoundé as a child, playing with no boots, in bare feet and on hard gravel, gave me the strength and courage to succeed.”

“When I moved to France, playing for Bastia I thought I had achieved a miracle. However, this was only the start as my journey continued to Arsenal and Barcelona, two of the greatest clubs in the World. So many people have helped me along the way, my wife, my kids, family, friends, my agent, coaches and of course all my team mates whom I will forever be grateful.”

Song was loved wherever he played. His influence steadily grew at the Emirates and heralding the beginning of the most consistent and prolific era of his career.

The Arsenal legend blessed with natural abilities that made him one of the leading midfielders of his generation, Song was a key figure in the title-winning season of 2009/10, aiding Arsene Wegner’s team to triumphs in the La Liga and Spanish Super Cup before moving to on to make a name elsewhere.

“Of course Charlton, West Ham, Rubin Kazan, Sion and Arta/Solar 7 will always remain in my heart. Having the honour of representing my country 60 times also filled me with great pride. I feel blessed with so many great memories that will remain with me forever.”

“Lastly, I would like to thank all the fans who have supported me along the way, I will treasure everything. I hope to see you all again soon.”

The midfielder graduated from Bastia’s Academy and ultimately clocking up 419 games and 14 goals from the deep holding midfield position.

Song helped Cameroon to the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON ) final in Ghana.

He will now switch to other business in the football industry.
