The Uganda U-20 Men’s National Football team, Hippos, put a splendid performance, beating one of the tournament’s favorites Nigeria at Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday evening.

A repeat of last year’s Total Energies CAF U-20 AFCON quarter-final clash, the East African side reigned supreme this time round.

Half an hour played, Usama Arafat put Uganda ahead before Shadiq Isiyaka restored parity from a corner.

The first stanza ended in a 1-1 scoreline, leaving much anticipation for the next 45 minutes ahead.

With 10 minutes to the final mark, Ivan Irinimbabazi reproduced the ultimate moment, netting the winner.

In an early kickoff, reigning Africa champions, Senegal were 1-0 winners over debutants South Sudan in the same group.

Sixteen year old Lamine Sadio scored the lone goal to hand Senegal maximum points on match day one.

Action continues to unfold today at the same venue. Hosts Ghana play Congo while Gambia tussle it out against Benin.
