African Men’s club Volleyball Championship: Al Ahly Clinches 16th Title Amidst Port Autonome’s Decline

Al Ahly’s men’s volleyball team overcame degrnding champions Mouloudia Sport of Bousalem with a clean sweep (3-0) on Tuesday’s finale of the African men club volleyball championship.

Absent in the previous edition, the Egyptian side claimed their sixteenth championship title and tenth as host .

Despite a strong showing, the Tunisian side Mouloudia Sport de Bousalem couldn’t replicate their previous success, as they succumbed to Al Ahly’s prowess in three straight sets (21-25, 17-25, 18-25).

As the newly-crowned African champions, Al Ahly will represent the continent at the FIVB World Championships for Men’s Volleyball Champion Clubs, scheduled for December 2024.

“We had an outstanding tournament and rightfully claimed the title. Winning on our home ground is exhilarating. However, we must now focus and prepare diligently for the upcoming challenges,” expressed Fernando Muñoz Benítez, the Spanish head coach of Al Ahly Volleyball.

Four of its players also featured in the tournament’s dream team lineup with 39-year-old Ahmed Abdelhay winning the MVP

As for Cameroon’s flag bearers Port Autonome de Douala, the team finished in eight position after losing classification matches to the Police Volleyball Club of Rwanda and Kenya Ports Authority.

The team had shown promise during the group stages and the round of 16 but faced disillusionment in the quarter-finals against Libya’s Naser.

This is four place further from their previous finish.

The 2024 African Club Championship concluded in Cairo on Tuesday April 23,2024.
