AFCON 2023: Shocking results in first round of matches, Cote D’Ivoire, Senegal, Morocco, Mali raises the bar high, round one stats

First round of matches in all six (06) groups in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire have come to an end.

The first round matches were characterized by some shocking results as “underdogs” pulled out some shocking results against favorites.

In Group A, host, Cote D’Ivoire opened the tournament in style with a 2#0 victory against Guinea-Bissau with Seko Fofana and Jean Philippe Krasso scoring for the hosts.

In the other Group A match, one of the tournament favourites, Nigeria, were forced to a one all draw by Equatorial Guinea. Iban Salvador scored for Equatorial Guinea while Victor Osimhen scored for Nigeria.

In Group B, Cape Verde pulled one of the shocks of the tournament so far with a brilliant 2#1 victory against the Black Stars of Ghana. Jamiro Monteiro and Garry Rodrigues scored for Cape Verde while Alexander Djiku scored for Ghana.

Meanwhile, Mozambique also pulled another shock forcing eight time champions, Egypt, to a two all draw. Mustapha Mohamed and Mohamed Salah scored for Egypt while Quembo and Clesio Bauque scored for Mozambique.

In Group C, defending champions, Senegal, announced themselves in style with a 3#0 spanking of Gambia. Lamine Camara scored a brace while Pape Gueye scored the other.

Cameroon and Guinea played a one all draw. Mohamed Bayo opened scores for Guinea while Frank Magri equalized for Cameroon.

Angola pulled another shocking result in Group D, holding Algeria to a one all draw. Baghdad Boundjah scored for Algeria and Cristovao Mabululu scored from the spot for Angola.

In the other Group D match, Bertrand Traore scored a last minute penalty to give all three points to Burkina Faso against Mauritania.

In Group E, Namibia also pulled up a shocking results against Tunisia. Deon Hotto scored late as Namibia picked up their first ever AFCON win.

Meanwhile, Mali defeated South Africa 2#0. Hamari Traore and Sinayoko scored both goals for Mali while Percy Tau missed a first half penalty for South Africa.

In Group F, tournament favourites, Morocco made no mistakes against Tanzania as they grabbed a 3#0 win. Roman Saiss, Azzedine Ounahi and Youssef El-Nesyri scored the three goals for the Atlas Lions of Morocco.

In the other Group F match, DR Congo and Zambia played a one all draw. Kings Kangwa scored for Zambia while Yoane Wissa scored for DR Congo.

In 12 matches played for the first round of matches, 27 goals were scored with Group B being the highest scoring group with 7 goals scored in two Group B matches.

Group A matches have produced 4 goals, Group B with 7 goals, Group C with 5 goals, Group D with 3 goals, Group E with 3 goals and Group F with 5 goals.

Lamine Camara, 20, is the leading the golden boots race with 2 goals. He scored a brace for Senegal against Gambia.
