Nigeria forward, Kelechi Iheanacho faces a late fitness test to determine his eligibility for next month’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
The Leicester City player last played for the Foxes during their 1-1 draw with Ipswich on Boxing Day as he replaced Patson Daka in the 63rd minute.
He was not in the squad that secured a 2-0 win against Cardiff on Friday casting doubt on his fitness ahead of AFCON 2023.
Leicester City coach, Enzo Faresca has given an update on Iheanacho’s absence from the team’s last league match.
“He had a muscular problem some days ago. We’ll see now how he is and if he can be okay for the next one”, the coach said.
The Super Eagles will resume camping for AFCON 2023 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on January 1, 2024, with the former Manchester City forward part of the final 25-player roster.
He has scored five goals with an assist after 19 league games for the Foxes this season in their quest to gain promotion from second tier English Championship to top flight English Premier League.
His team enters the New Year as league leaders and in pole position to return to the top flight.
The latest development comes as a blow for Jose Peseiro who will need the fire power of Iheanacho upfront for the AFCON which kicks off on January 13, 2024.
