It is no longer news that Cote D’Ivoire senior men’s national team beat 2021 champions, Senegal on penalties in the Round of 16 clash at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The goal that took the game into extra time and penalties was historic.

Before the game between the Teranga Lions and the Elephants, 98 goals had been scored in the tournament.

Habib Diallo who scored the Senegalese opener converted the 99th goal of AFCON 2023.

Kessie’s 86th minute penalty which took the game into extra time and penalties was the 100th goal the competition hosted by Cote D’Ivoire.

The goal was crucial as it propelled the host to a historic win which ended the quest of the defending champions, Senegal from getting back-to-back titles.

The focus now is on Mali as the Elephants attempt to win another AFCON title.

The last time they won the trophy was in 2015 under the current coach of the French senior women’s national team, Herve Renard.
