AFCON 2023: Cote d’Ivoire send holders Senegal out of the tournament

Hosts, Cote d’Ivoire qualified for the quarter final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a 4-5 win on penalties over 2021 winners, Senegal in the Round of 16 on Monday.

The game ended in a 1-1 draw after regulation time.

Habib Diallo scored the opening goal for the Teranga Lions with a brilliant shot into the top left corner after being released inside the box by a superb lofted pass from Sadio Mane in the fourth minute.

In the 41st minute, Seko Fofana pickeed up a precise pass deep inside the box, but his strike was saved by the keeper.

Two minutes into the second half, Habib Diallo had time and space inside the box after picking up a neat pass, but his shot toward the bottom left corner was brilliantly saved by Yahia Fofana.

Ismail Jakobs made a yard for himself inside the box after an accurate pass and took a shot that went just wide of the right post in the 67th minute.

Lamine Camara decided to unleash a long-range shot. Despite hitting it very well, it scorched inches wide of the left post.

Nicolas Pepe met a lofted pass inside the box in the 77th minute with a well placed shot towards the top of the net, but Edouard Mendy pulled off a fantastic save to deny him.

With six minutees to the end of the match, the host finally got the chance to level the scoreline after a foul on Pepe inside the box with a penalty awarded.

Franck Kessie put the ball into the bottom right corner past the outstretched arm of Edouard Mendy for the equaliser.

Both the match remaining in a stalemate, extra time was imperative.

Sadio Mane had the best chance in the first period of extra time as he latched onto a cross inside the box and aimed a shot toward the bottom left corner, but Yahia Fofana reacted superbly to deny him.

After 120 minutes, the game had to be decided on penalties.

Cote d’Ivoire won the shoot outs 5-4 and will face either Burkina Faso or Mali in the quarter final.
