Ghanian captain, Andre Ayew made history when his side unfortunately succumbed to a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde in their opening Group B match of AFCON 2023 at the Stade Felix Houphouet Boigny on Sunday.
The Le Havre forward joined two other African legends to have attended the most number of Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) when he was introduced in the second half of a forgettable match.
He joined Ahmed Hassan (Egypt) and current coach of Cameroon, Rigobert Song as a member of the exclusive club of 8 different tournament participations.
The former Westham player has featured at eight differrent AFCONs like the two legends from Egypt and Cameroon.
Ayew played his first ever AFCONÂ on home soil in 2008 as Egypt won their sixth African title.
He further played at the 2010, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2021 before making it to his eighth AFCON this year in Cote d’Ivoire.
Scoring over 20 goals in over a 100 games, the former Swansea City player will hope to add to his goal tally as the Black Stars faces Egypt in a tough game and in a bid to get their tournament back on the front foot.
