Hubert Velud: “There are no small nations” — Comoros coach wary of Cameroon

Comoros head coach Hubert Velud has acknowledged the gulf in squad depth between his side and Cameroon but insists the Coelacanths will not be intimidated when the two teams meet in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Garoua on Thursday.

Cameroon and Comoros will clash at the Roumdé Adjia Stadium on September 24, with kick-off scheduled for 8pm, as both teams begin their Group G campaign in the race for a place at the 2027 AFCON finals.

Velud revealed that his technical staff have studied Cameroon extensively ahead of the encounter, including their performances at the Africa Cup of Nations and in other competitions.

“We watched multiple games of Cameroon, from AFCON and other competitions. But with Cameroon, we should always expect something.”

The French tactician admitted that Cameroon possess significantly greater squad depth, but stressed that international football can produce unexpected results.

“True, we can’t compare the squad depth of Cameroon with that of Comoros. But we need to acknowledge that this is an international game and these days everything is possible.”

Velud also expects a closely contested Group G campaign, with the battle for qualification potentially going down to the final round.

“Our group is tough. Looking at all nations, it will be a close call and might need the final day of play to get all results.”

The Comoros boss is also aware of the history between the two countries, particularly the Coelacanths’ previous meetings with the Indomitable Lions. However, he believes past encounters cannot determine what happens in the latest chapter.

“I am conscious of the H-2-H record between Cameroon and Comoros. I equally know Cameroon is rebuilding. We can’t just be counting on past results. We are looking at the present.”

For Velud, the message to his players is clear: reputation and history will count for little once the match begins.

“There are no small nations in football anymore.”

With both teams seeking an early advantage in Group G, Thursday’s encounter promises to provide an immediate test of Cameroon’s new-look side and Comoros’ ability to compete against one of Africa’s traditional heavyweights.
