Morocco produced another memorable FIFA World Cup performance, defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a pulsating 1-1 draw following 120 minutes to secure a place in the Round of 16.
The Atlas Lions showed remarkable character to fight back from a goal down before prevailing in a dramatic penalty shootout at the end of an enthralling Round of 32 encounter.
After a cagey first half, the Netherlands broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute when Cody Gakpo found the back of the net to put Ronald Koeman’s side within touching distance of the next round.
Morocco, however, refused to give in. With time running out, centre-back Issa Diop rose highest to head home a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser in the 90+3rd minute, sending the contest into extra time.
The Atlas Lions were the brighter side during the additional 30 minutes but could not find a winner, forcing the tie to be decided from the penalty spot.
The shootout proved tense and error-filled. Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi struck the post with his effort, while the Netherlands also missed through Jurrien Timber and Justin Kluivert. Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou then produced the decisive save by denying Crysencio Summerville, leaving Ismael Saibari with the opportunity to seal qualification.
Saibari calmly converted the winning penalty as Morocco claimed a 3-2 shootout victory, sparking jubilant celebrations among the players and thousands of travelling supporters.
The victory sends Morocco into the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, where they will take on Canada in what promises to be another fascinating knockout clash.
For the Netherlands, the defeat marks a disappointing end to their World Cup campaign despite leading for much of the second half, while Morocco continue to enhance their reputation as one of the tournament’s most resilient and dangerous teams.
