Cabo Verde have become one of the stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, qualifying for the Round of 32 without winning a single group-stage match. The Blue Sharks are the first nation to achieve the feat since Chile at the 1982 FIFA World Cup, proving that resilience and consistency can be just as valuable as victories on football’s biggest stage.

The island nation finished Group H unbeaten after three impressive draws against heavyweight opponents. They opened their campaign by frustrating Spain in a disciplined 0-0 stalemate before showing tremendous character to come from behind twice in an entertaining 2-2 draw with Uruguay. Their qualification was finally sealed with another determined defensive display in a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia.

While Cabo Verde scored just twice in the group stage, their success was built on defensive organisation, tactical discipline and an unwavering team spirit. They conceded only two goals in three matches, both against Uruguay, while keeping clean sheets against Spain and Saudi Arabia.

Several players have emerged as heroes of the campaign. Goalkeeper Vozinha has rolled back the years with a string of outstanding saves, providing the experience and leadership that has kept the Blue Sharks in every match. Captain Ryan Mendes has led by example, bringing composure, work rate and leadership in attack despite limited opportunities.

Midfielder Jovane Cabral has been instrumental in linking defence and attack, while centre-backs Roberto Lopes and Logan Costa have formed one of the tournament’s most resilient defensive partnerships, repeatedly frustrating some of the competition’s most dangerous forwards.

Head coach Bubista also deserves enormous credit. His well-drilled side have remained compact without the ball, disciplined in possession and fearless against higher-ranked opposition. Rather than trying to match their opponents player for player, Cabo Verde have relied on collective organisation, tactical intelligence and an unbreakable fighting spirit.

Their reward is a historic place in the Round of 32 and a place in World Cup folklore. Becoming the first team since Chile in 1982 to progress after drawing all three group matches is an extraordinary achievement, but the Blue Sharks will believe their journey is far from over. With confidence growing and momentum on their side, Cabo Verde have shown they are capable of troubling any opponent they face in the knockout stages.
