CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe has confirmed that the African Nations Championship (CHAN) will be discontinued, with the African Nations League set to take its place as the continent’s premier domestic-focused competition.
In candid remarks, Motsepe described CHAN as a “spectacular money loser” and said he was advised to scrap the tournament upon taking office. While CAF previously allocated resources to CHAN in response to requests from some member associations, Motsepe insists the competition no longer fits the organization’s strategic vision.
I can tell you for certain there is no CHAN anymore. The African Nations League will more than replace that. We will restructure our competitions,” he said.
The CHAN, first held in 2009 and staged every two years, was designed to showcase Africa’s best home-based talent. Morocco won the last edition in Kenya in 2024 and became the most successful nation in CHAN history with three titles.
Motsepe also addressed international scheduling and cooperation:
Europe doesn’t dictate the calendar. We also have to stop the nonsense that ‘these people are enemies of those people.’ We are going to have the best mutually beneficial relationship with Europe, Asia, South America, North America and the rest of the world.”
The CAF president’s comments signal a major restructuring of African competitions, prioritizing financial sustainability, global collaboration, and elevating the African Nations League as the new flagship tournament for domestic players.
