Experienced Cameroonian Football Writer and Club administrator, Angu Lesley Ngwa Akonwi has tasked clubs representing the Cameroon in the CAF Inter clubs to up their game and perform for the honour of the country’s football heritage and pride – when the new CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup season gets underway in September.
Colombe of Dja and Aigle Royal of Menoua were drawn against AS Jaraaf of Senegal and San Pedro of Cote D’Ivoire respectively by the CAF competitions department.
The two clubs enter the preliminary rounds of the competitions knowing they have the daunting task of making it past the preliminary rounds to better the performances of all Cameroonian clubs in the past three years.
Approached by our editorial team, Angu said Cameroonian clubs must urgently turn recent fortunes.
“Our clubs seem to be struggling with the Dynamics of the primary and secondary CAF competitions. Our clubs are lagging in terms of administrative and logistics preparations,” he started.
The last Cameroonian club to reach the group stage of the Confederation Cup was Cotonsport of Garoua in 2022 while no club from the country has won a continental title since Union last did in 1981.
Coton that is considered the most organized club by many Cameroonians reach the final of the Confederation Cup and Champions League in 2003 and 2008 respectively. Angu says its all down to organizing better.
“Remember both Fovu of Baham and Victoria United of Limbe didn’t have a full complement of players to pick from in their first preliminary round matches, and as a result they were all eliminated in the preliminary phase of the competition. We need to organize better,” Angu added.
“We all saw Kaizer Chiefs a few years ago against PWD of Bamenda in Limbe. Though they had players who were full internationals like Ithumeleng Khune, there wasn’t too much difference in terms of quality. PWD fought them tough toe to toe and narrowly lost in a game the host missed a late penalty. In the return game PWD arrived South Africa on match day and still got a goalless draw. Imagine if they were better organized and didn’t to for the pre-match meeting in Limbe without their match jerseys, team doctor etc?”
Organization is not the only problem as Angu highlight also highlighted the transfer of players as a key factor that must be looked into.
“Our clubs also need to up their game in the transfer management strategy. How do you explain the fact that Colombe’s first choice goalkeeper in the past three seasons, Nfor Idris left just 24 hours after the CAF Champions League draw. These shows a lot needs to be done to convince players financially or otherwise to stay.”
Angu’s call adds his voice to a popular opinion that in the past three seasons Cameroon clubs have failed to impress and need to urgently return to winning ways. The cash CAF is now injecting into the clubs in the two competitions should be enough incentives for Cameroon clubs and even the FA to an extent to invest to get result.
Colombe and Aigle Royal de la Menoua will start their continental quest for glory mid next month with matches in Senegal and Cote D’Ivoire respectively.
