Intermediate Lions head coach Soh Simplice has tipped Angel Yondjo Dorinel Matam to succeed at Lille as reports of the forward joining the Northerners gains steam.

The 18-year-old forward left Cameroon this week heading to France wherein he is expected to sign for Lille and become the most expensive player to switch from Cameroon to Europe at his tender age.

Reacting to the move in an exclusive conversation with the kick442.com crew, coach Simplice described him as the future of the Indomitable and believes he will thrive if given the opportunity anytime soon.

“It is a good move for his career and Cameroon football. This is a young guy with a lot of potential. I admire his style of play. Despite his young age, he has a good vision, tactically he is very good, has speed and cold head in the final third. To me, he is the best striker in the local League. No disrespect to Mbappe, Mfoumou and the rest but Yondjo is exceptional.”

Coach Simplice’s view is no surprise given his decision to start the young forward for the Intermediate Lions of Cameroon a few months back after watching him in just a few training sessions.

The coach who guided him to score on debut for a non age category national team when he scored for the Intermediate Lions against Central Africa Republic has backed his move to Lille.

“It is a big plus for him to move abroad. He has joined a club that made other young Africans to succeed. The likes of Carlos Baleba and Victor Osihmen got hige support from Lille. I hope he quickly integrates himself to the Lille first team and they give him the possibility to showcase. If he is well managed he will be the successor of Samuel Eto’o Fils,” he concluded.

The young striker is expected to complete medicals and other pre-signing formalities this week and secure a five-year switch to Lille from EFBC in Cameroon.

The fee of €2 millions for the 2023 UNIFFAC U-17 top scorer and Most Valuable Player makes him Cameroon’s all-time most expensive export. This surely explains why a number of pundits have been clamouring for him to be included in the senior national team squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations
