The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has entrusted Morocco with hosting three pivotal events, underscoring the nation’s rising prominence in African football.

These events include the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League, the CAF Awards 2024, and the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026.

The 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League is scheduled to take place from November 9 to November 23, 2024.

This tournament, which Morocco hosted in 2022, will welcome eight of the continent’s top women’s football clubs. The lineup includes defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, alongside formidable contenders like ASFAR, Aigle de la Medina, Edo Queens, University of Western Cape, Tutankhamun, CBE FC, and TP Mazembe.

Mamelodi Sundowns will be among the favorites to retain their title, but they will face stiff competition from Morocco’s own ASFAR, who clinched the title in 2022. The winner set to walk away with a hefty prize of $400,000.

On December 16, 2024, Morocco will host the prestigious CAF Awards for the third consecutive year. Often referred to as the “African Ballon d’Or,” this ceremony honors the best performers in African football over the past year. Categories include African Player of the Year, African Women’s Player of the Year, and Coach of the Year, among others.

This star-studded event will bring together football legends, officials, and fans to celebrate the achievements and contributions of African footballers. While the exact venue is yet to be announced, expectations are high for a grand affair that reflects Morocco’s commitment to excellence in sports hosting.

Morocco has also been awarded hosting rights for the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026, slated for February 23 to April 5, 2026. This tournament is vital as it serves as a qualifying event for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and is a highlight on the African football calendar.

The tournament will feature 12 teams competing for continental supremacy, with matches expected to unfold in some of Morocco’s most iconic stadiums. Morocco’s selection as host for this prestigious event—its third time following the 2022 and 2024 editions—highlights its growing reputation as a reliable and capable host for major football events.

These upcoming tournaments add to Morocco’s impressive portfolio, which also sees them host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in December and the U17 women’s world cup for the next five years starting from 2025.

The country’s role as host for these three major events is a testament to its strategic investments in football infrastructure and development.

Morocco’s successful hosting of previous tournaments, including the 2022 WAFCON and the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup, has demonstrated its capability to deliver world-class sporting events. Furthermore, this commitment positions Morocco favorably as it prepares for a potential bid to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
