Cape Verde senior men’s national team qualified for the quarter final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after a 1-0 victory against Mauritania in one of the Round of 16 game in Abidjan on Monday.
Ryan Mendes penalty won the game for the island country in the late embers of the match.
Cape Verde’s Ryan Mendes received a pass on the edge of the box and shoots, but the ball went inches wide of the right post in the 10th minute.
Jovane also had a chance for the island country in the 47th minute as he find himself in space on the edge of the box and smashed a glorious looking effort toward the left side of the goal, but Babacar Niasse thwarted him with a great two-handed save.
Ten minutes later, a free kick from the edge of the box was taken by Mauritania’s Aboubakary Koita who fired in a direct effort just wide of the right post.
Gaining confidence, Mauritania’s Souleymane Anne received a precise pass and hammered the ball at goal from close range. Unfortunately for him, his aim was a bit off and it flied just over the bar.
In the 80th minute, Kevin Lenini wins himself just enough space inside the box to connect with the corner. His header flied toward the left post, but the goalkeeper dives superbly to stop the effort.
With three minutes before the end of the match, Babacar Niasse made a slide tackle, but referee Mohamed Adel awarded a penalty.
Ryan Mendes put the ball into the middle of the goal past the outstretched arm of Babacar Niasse to convert the winning goal for Cape Verde.
Cape Verde progressed to the quarter final and will face the winner of the match between Morocco and South Africa.
