The Head Coach of 2021 CAF Women’s Champions League winners, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies’ Jerry Tshabalala says teams should be wary of the debutants.
Ahead of the South Africans’ final Group A game with host and another debutant, Athletico FC (Ivory Coast), Tshabalala expects another tough encounter.
With the semi-final spot sealed after victories over JKT Queens (Tanzania) and CS Casablanca (Morocco), Sundown’s coach picked his title challenger for the tournament.
“One should be wary of the new teams in this tournament as they are capable of pulling up surprises,” Tshabalala told kick442.com
“We know teams like ASFAR FC as the holders but one doesn’t know what debutants can bring to the table hence treading with caution is key for the tournament to win the title.
“I think we should watch out for Ampem Darkoa (Ghana). For a team to stop Nigerian champions from qualifying for the tournament for the first time, it means they have something to offer.
“I was surprised that they [Ampem Darkoa] beat Delta Queens, scored a goal, and held on to the win despite the Nigerians’ dominance. With that, other teams should be careful and watch out for them. They are one of my favorites.” He concluded.
Sundowns Ladies won the Maiden CAF Women’s Champions League in Morocco (2021) in Egypt and lost the 2022 finals to ASFAR FC in Morocco.
With the last four place sealed, Tshabalala’s side will hope to reclaim the title away from home.
The team’s perfect start to the 2023 tournament is at stake against Athletico FC on Saturday with the Ivorian side in need of a win to make the semi-finals.
