- Aboudi dedicated the trophy to victims of the Mbankolo landslide incident back in Cameroon
CSKA Moscow put four past Zenit St Petersburg Ladies on Sunday to claim the 2023 Russian Women’s Football cup again after a 4-1 victory powered by a brace from Russian forward Nadezhda Smirnova was complemented by goals from Francisca Ordega and evergreen Cameroonian forward Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene.
Sunday’s final at the Rastec Arena turned out to be a one-sided affair as CSKA were just too much for their opponents to content in an afternoon that the Moscow front three displayed their class again.
The game opening 45 minutes of the game didn’t produce as many talking points as Zenit adopted a conservative approach to deny CSKA the spaces around the back-four which has always been their strong point.
However, 3-year-old Aboudi put her experience to full capacity just before the interval to give coach Maksim Yuryevich Zinovyev side ahead and set the tone for what had promised to be a good afternoon for CSKA.
Though CSKA remained the better side upon the interval, Zenit somehow found their way back into the game, through Grzwinska who made it 1-1 after 49 minutes.
The goal spurred Aboudi and co to become more purposeful or risk been shocked in another final.
Smirnova restored the advantage in the 55 minutes, converting a penalty to make it 2-1 before Ordega opened a two-goal cushion with the third for CSKA. The goal from the Nigerian international meant all front three in action for the Moscow lady had put their names on the score sheet.
Zenit struggled to get fight their way back into the contest as CSKA dominated the rest of the game, trapping their opponents in their half most often than not.
Smirnova made sure the trophy stayed in Moscow when she scored the fourth two minutes from time – completing a brace in the final which she could have scored more goals if she finished better.
The Russian Cup triumph is the first reward of the efforts of Aboudi and co who continue chasing the domestic championship crown.
Aboudi dedicated the trophy to victims of the Mbankolo landslide who lost life and properties via the tragic incident that occurred last week in the popular neighborhood in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
Tenths of Cameroonians were affected by the incident, with a handful losing their lives. Aboudi’s T shirt with the words ‘Je suis Mbankolo’ losely translated as ‘I am Mbankolo’ is at least a show of support.
CSKA will switch their attention to the domestic championship with hopes of finishing strongly to ensure that they complete a domestic double and secure a UEFA Champions League position next season.
