- Morocco will use the event to intensify the push to host the 2030 FIFA World CupÂ
Morocco will host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the continent’s Football governing body, CAF Executive Committee members have decided this Wednesday via a voting process, beating out two other bids to earn the right to stage the 24-team event.
The decision was announced by CAF president, Dr Patrice Motsepe after completion of the voting process by the Executive Committee members during their regular meeting in Cairo.
The country’s bid first received a standing ovation when president Fouzi Lekjaa, of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation elaborated on it during a ten minutes briefing in the presence of the EXCO today in Cairo.
25 training pitches – one per national team, one pitch for Referees’ training, eight major stadiums in Casablanca, Rabat, Salé, Marrakech, Agadir, Tanger, Tétouane and Fes, modern transport, health, communications facilities plus its impressive political relationships made the bid generally acceptable.
The North African Nation last hosted a men’s major football tournament in 2018, staging that year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) which they won.
CAF received three bids to host the tournament, from Algeria, Morocco, Zambia as well as a joint bid from Benin and Nigeria.
However, Algeria on instructions from its government pulled out on the eve of the executive committee meeting to decide the next host.
The Moroccan bid, unrivaled at all levels, provided the strongest face value, making it to the CAF Executive Committee’s final round of voting, where it received 24 votes against zero for Algeria and the joint bid for Benin and Nigeria.
Africa will head to Morocco within a year after the next tournament in Côte D’Ivoire.
Last year’s tournament, which was postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, had a record following globally and an interesting attendance across Cameroon.
The next event will be played in Côte D’Ivoire from January next year.
Morocco also served as host of FIFA Club World Cup last December. Before then, the North African kingdom had masterminded an impressive Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AWCON) that drew praises globally for its fanfare and record crowds.
