Cameroon’s star midfielder, André-Frank Zambo Anguissa will wear the captain’s armband for the Indomitable Lions when they face Mauritius in their World Cup qualifying match on Friday.

The Napoli player, who has made 11 Seria A appearance this season, was confirmed as the match’s captain by coach Rigobert Song in his pre-match press conference on Thursday

Song believes Zambo , who has 49 caps and five goals for his country, was the natural choice to lead the team in the absence of regular captain Vincent Aboubakar, who is injured and Vice Eric Maxim who didn’t make the cut .

“I will say this, when ever the captain and vice are not here and you look at the caliber of player Zambo Anguissa is, it is normal that he leads the team” Coach Rigobert Song announced

Zambo Anguissa, who is no stranger to this task hopes to inspire his teammates especially the younger generation to a victory that would boost their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

“The armband is just an armband, with all the respect I have for the immense honor to be captain, I think its not theost important for me. My role in the dressing room is to guide the young ones .to welcome everyone intergrating the den like a brother, because we are like a family. And for me that’s the most important. I play that role with or without the arm band. It’s an honor for me to wear the captain armband of the Cameroon national team, but I will say, with or without it I am someone who gives 100% of himself and when I speak of person I don’t only talk of me as a footballer ” Zambo explains.

Captaining the national team will be Zambo’s gift since turning 28, as the midfielder celebrated his birthday on November 16, 2023.

The match will take place at the Japoma sports stadium in douala, at 8pm. It will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2011, when Cameroon won 5-0 in a friendly.

As the heavyweights of Group D, the Indomitable Lions will be eyeing the top spot, especially with a kind draw that pits them against Cape Verde, Angola, Libya, Eswatini.
