Cameroon’s hopes of advancing to the next round of the World Deaf Football Championship were dashed by a 5-2 defeat to Iran on Wednesday in Malaysia.

Lambou gave Cameroon the lead in the 25th minute with a low shot from a corner kick. Iran equalized less than ten minutes later.

Lambou restored Cameroon’s lead with a header deep into the first half. However, Iran turned the game around in the second half and won 5-2.

Cameroon finished at the bottom of their group with no points, having scored two goals and conceded 16 in three matches.

Reacting to this elimination, president Jean Valery Pemha ,explains his optimism for this side.

“At the end of the Malaysian competition, we noticed that our team is young following the project to rejuvenate the national teams that we had implemented but these young people did their best despite the lack of experience because it is their first participation in such a level of competition,” he explains

Iran and France and Japan have qualified for the next round, with France beating Japan 1-0 in the other group match.

The Lions will play the 17-20 classification match match on Friday. Their opponents are still to be decided.

Cameroon will now focus on preparing for the deaf Africa cup of nations which will be held in Senegal in January 2024. This competition will also serve as a qualifier for the 2025 Deaflympics in Japan.

“I remain optimistic because I have noticed that they are improving as the matches pass so when we return to Cameroun we will intensify training so that she shows another face to the African Cup and qualifies for the Deaflympics of Japan 2025,” Valery Pemha concluded.

Other African countries to have qualified for the second round of the tournament are Egypt,Senegal , Gabon, Nigeria, Ghana.
