The 2023 West Africa Zone A (WAFU-A) Women’s Tournament kicked off on Friday with the host laying down a marker.
Host of the tournament, Cape Verde earned a 4-0 win over Guinea Bissau.
Vania Moreira scored twice and was also voted Women Of The Match, Joseane Fernandes and Sasha Wahnon are the scorers on this first day.
Moreira scored the opening goal of the game in the tenth minute.
Fernandes doubled the host’s lead in the 20th minute before Moreira scored her second goal of the game on the dot of 45 minutes.
Wahnon in the 55th minute scored the only goal recorded in the second half.
Mauritania and Guinea Bissau will meet in the second Group A match on Sunday.
Group B games will take centre stage on Saturday with Senegal and Guinea setting the pace by 15:00.
The second match will take place between Sierra Leone and The Gambia.
