The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon have departed for Algeria as preparations intensify ahead of the first leg of their 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier.

The opening clash between Algeria and Cameroon is scheduled for 23 October in Oran, with the return leg to follow on 28 October in Douala.

Head coach Jean-Baptiste Bisseck has named a competitive squad blending home-based talents with established internationals from top European clubs. The team concluded its third pre-match training camp in Douala before flying to Algeria on 20 October.

The travelling party boasts several key figures, including captain Gabrielle Aboudi Onguéné of CSKA Moscow, Nchout Njoya Ajara, Falone Meffoumettou, and Toko Njoya of Real Madrid CF. The squad also welcomes back goalkeeper Michaely Biyina, who plays in Portugal, strengthening Cameroon’s options between the posts.

Cameroon last met Algeria in WAFCON 2018, when they won 3-0 courtesy of goals from Nchout, Gabrielle Aboudi, and Gaëlle Enganamouit. Since that meeting, much has changed. Algeria has steadily risen in African women’s football, reaching the latter stages of the recent WAFCON in Morocco and giving eventual champions Nigeria a difficult challenge. Meanwhile, Cameroon missed out on that tournament for the first time in history, making this qualifier a key step in reclaiming their status among Africa’s elite.

The Lionesses will be eager to take a strong result from Oran ahead of the decisive return leg at the Japoma Stadium in Douala. With a blend of experience and youth, Cameroon will be looking to rediscover their continental dominance as they begin their journey toward the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
