Football circles in Nigeria and Europe are mourning the tragic death of promising Nigerian winger Victor Udoh, who reportedly passed away at the age of 21 during a visit to Abuja.

According to reports emerging from Nigeria and Belgium, the former Southampton FC and Royal Antwerp FC attacker was found dead on Monday morning after allegedly spending the previous evening with friends in the Nigerian capital. Early indications suggest suspected food or alcohol poisoning may have played a role in the incident, though authorities have yet to officially confirm the exact cause of death.

The heartbreaking news has triggered an outpouring of tributes from across the football world, particularly from Belgium where Udoh first rose to prominence after leaving Abuja-based Hypebuzz FC in 2023 to join Royal Antwerp.

Royal Antwerp reportedly released an emotional statement following the reports of his passing, expressing deep sadness and sending condolences to his family, friends and loved ones during what the club described as an extremely difficult moment.

Udoh was regarded as one of Nigeria’s brightest young attacking prospects. Known for his explosive pace, dribbling skills and direct attacking style, he impressed rapidly within Antwerp’s youth system, scoring 12 goals in 21 matches for the Young Reds before earning promotion to the senior side.

The winger went on to make several appearances for Antwerp’s first team in the Belgian top flight and featured during the club’s domestic cup and league campaigns. His performances eventually attracted interest from England, leading to a move to Southampton in February 2025 on a long-term deal.

Although he initially joined Southampton’s U21 setup as part of his development, Udoh later continued his career in the Czech Republic with SK Dynamo České Budějovice.

Beyond football, Udoh was also known in his local community for regularly returning home to support young people and distribute food and drinks in his neighbourhood during holidays.

As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding his death, many within the football fraternity have continued to pay tribute to a talented young player whose career appeared destined for bigger stages.
