Cameroon international, Karl Toko Ekambi was at the verge of gifting Rennes a Europa league quarter-final ticket, scoring the lone goal of regular time in the Second leg playoffs clash against Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Indomitable Lion’s forward netted at the 52nd minute after both sides played a barren first half. It was only at the 106’ that Ibrahim Salah came in and scored the second for Rennes.

However, the two goal lead and ticket already at their finger tip was shattered by an own goal from Rennes’ central defense man, Jeanuel Belocian at the 119’ causing the game to end on post match penalties.

Rennes, were then eliminated on post match penalties 4-5 after Lesley Ugochuku, Birgar Meling and Jeremy Doku failed to convert their penalties.

Nonetheless, Ekambi, 30, has now scored in two consecutive matches for Rennes, especially overturning a one goal deficit to give the club hopes of reaching the next round at least.

He eventually scored the lone goal in Rennes’ 1-2 loss to Shakhtar in the first leg round of 16 clash away from home. He scored at the 59th minute, just a seven minutes.

Note that, Ekambi is on loan to Rennes from Lyon and has played five games in a row, including just one on the bench.

He played 77 minutes in the Europa league round of 16 first leg game against Shakhtar and played was brought out at the 97’ in this second legged clash.

Ekambi will now focus on continuing his goal streak in the Ligue 1 championship, were they occupy the 5th position on the classification table.
