The Cameroon top-flight championship dobbed the MTN Elite One championship has arguably the most intriguing relegation battle of all time this 2022/23 season.

An incredible number of over ten clubs are pushing to avoid being part of the crew of five to leave the prestigious elite championship come the end of the season.

The points gap between the sides in the top half of the table and those in the bottle half in both Pool A and B in the abridged championship makes it impossible for players of concern clubs to have a full night sleep.

In Pool A, Aigle Royal of Menoua currently occupies the fourth spot, but are not far from trouble. The El Pacha are only three points of Avion Academy and Renaissance FC, who occupy the bottom two positions. This indicates that mathematically only Canon Yaounde, Cotonsport and UMS are out of the relegation battle while five of the other eight sides stand a chance of being relegated.

There isn’t much of a difference in Pool B. Like in Pool A, uncertainty looms, many are in danger and battling to avoid troubled waters of relegation though they are running out of matches except for Dragon of Yaounde.

The Cha Cha Boys simply failed to find their swagger in this season’s championship. Coach Stephane Edjangue’s team reached the end of their nine-year stay in Elite 1 two weeks ago with three games left.

Eight other clubs, from Fovu in the third spot in Pool B to YAFOOT in the last-but-one position are still in the relagation battle with at least two round of matches remaining for most of the clubs.

Though they are all in the relagation battle, the likes of YAFOOT and Fortuna have their work cut-out. They need to win all their remaining matches to stand a chance of not being directly relegated or not being one of two teams in the relegation playoff match.
