Nigerian football legends led by Jay Jay Okocha have arrived Cameroon ahead of Thursday’s friendly game at the Limbe Omnisport stadium, against their Cameroonian counterparts of the early 2000 generation.
Okocha and co touched down the Douala International Airport in the afternoon of this Tuesday, November 28 and were treated to a great reception before moving to their base.
This squad of legendary footballers who made a name for themselves will face counterparts from Cameroon as part of efforts to reunite and also reemphasize investing in Plantain and Banana agriculture to keep footballers going even upon retirement.
The friendly match to hold on the sidelines of the Plantain-Banana festival will take place on Thursday November 30, 2023.
Cameroon players called up in the list signed by the President of the National Association of Cameroonian Footballers, Lucien Mettomo have most of the stars of the yesteryears though the likes of Geremi Njitap, Patrick Mboma and Pierre Wome are conspicuously absent.
This year’s event reserved for retired footballers has attracted a number of top players of Nigeria’s golden generation.
Jay Jay Okocha, Tijani Babangida, Victor Ikpeba amongst others of those good old days are expected to grace the event in Southwest Cameroon.
The football match is an innovation to the laudable initiative aimed at encouraging footballers to invest in large scale bananas plantation upon retirement.
Last year’s edition of the event took place in Ebolowa but ended off the pitch.
This year’s innovation to include a match for legends has drawn praises from football stakeholders across the board, though some face difficulty in reconciling the absence of some of the big names.
