Akho Ndzingo, a respected Premier Soccer League (PSL) referee and dedicated police officer, was fatally shot in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.

The incident occurred on the night of Wednesday, 12 June 2024, when Ndzingo was performing his police duties in Site B, Khayelitsha. Despite being rushed to Khayelitsha Hospital, he tragically did not survive the injuries sustained during the shooting.

Ndzingo, affectionately known as Akho, was a beloved member of the Lingelethu Local Football Association and had officiated matches up to the professional level.

His contributions to football were recognized early in his career; at the age of 22, he was honored as the SAFA Cape Town Referee of the Year.

The loss of Akho Ndzingo is not only a blow to the sporting world but also to the community he served as a law enforcement officer. His commitment to fair play on the field and his dedication to public service off the field will be remembered by many.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa says the Hawks are investigating a case of murder:

“Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect. Police have opened a murder and attempted murder docket. Psychosocial support for the colleagues of the deceased member is currently being provided by the SAPS employee health and wellness practitioners”.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation, and further details are awaited. The community mourns the untimely passing of a man who represented the spirit of resilience and passion in both his professional endeavors.
