Edouard Sombang’s remarkable rise with Colombe Sportive du Dja et Lobo has earned the goalkeeper another call-up to the Cameroon senior national team, capping a remarkable period for the 28-year-old shot-stopper.
Sombang has been at the heart of Colombe’s historic march into the group stage of the CAF Champions League, keeping seven clean sheets in eight appearances during the club’s continental campaign. His consistency between the posts has helped the Cameroonian champions negotiate some of the toughest moments of their campaign and book their place among Africa’s elite clubs for the group stage.
His form was particularly important during Colombe’s first-round tie against Stade Malien. After two goalless draws, the Cameroonian champions prevailed 4-3 on penalties, with Sombang once again standing tall when the pressure was at its highest. Colombe then eliminated Senegalese champions Teungueth FC 3-0 on aggregate, winning 2-0 in Dakar before completing the job with a 1-0 victory at home.
The qualification represents a historic achievement for Colombe and ends a long wait for Cameroon to have a representative in the CAF Champions League group stage. Sombang, who joined Colombe in August 2025 after spells with PWD Bamenda and Dynamo de Douala, has been one of the major pillars behind that success.
Born on May 29, 1998, Sombang has steadily built a reputation as one of the most dependable goalkeepers in Cameroonian football. His return to the Indomitable Lions set-up is also not entirely new territory. He was previously called up to Cameroon’s senior squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, although he did not make an appearance at the tournament.
Now he returns to the national team at arguably the strongest point of his career. Seven clean sheets in eight CAF Champions League matches, a historic qualification with Colombe and his growing authority between the posts have made his selection difficult to overlook.
Sombang will now have the opportunity to turn his impressive continental form into an international breakthrough. For a goalkeeper who has spent years working his way through Cameroonian football, the return to the Indomitable Lions represents another significant step in a career that is rapidly entering a new chapter.
