The president of the Cameroon football federation (FECAFOOT) returned from the USA in time to set the ball rolling for the 2023/24 MTN Elite One championship.

Eto’o who was in the USA on Monday for the UN organized mission 89 project of curbing trafficking of young athletes was a surprise presence at the Ngoa Ekelle stadium on Wednesday evening.

The former Barcelona and Chelsea striker gave the formality kick-off of Fauve Azur Elite versus newcomers Victoria United FC and received a standing ovation from the thousands of Cameroon football lovers and fans who had turned out to watch both clubs.

Reputable figures like Albert Roger Milla, Lucien Mettomo, Rigobert Song joined a host of ex Cameroon international on the Wednesday night to watch and encourage the new generation of footballers.

Though Nji Richmond’s brace sanctioned the night in favour of Victoria United on their return to the top-flight, there was greater attention on Eto’o, as fanatics as well as critics had their say on his antics.

The resumption of the new season brings an end to an over three months holiday for Cameroon-based footballers, who have been out of work since after last season’s playoffs during which Cotonsport edged three other clubs to land their 18th title.

This season’s Elite One championship has 19 clubs competing to earn one of the eight spots reserved for the title playoffs, come the business end of the season.

This first phase of the championship managed by a Eto’o-guided transition commission will end in January, while the playoffs will be played after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in early February.

The Champion of this season’s competition will earn 50 Millions FCFA plus a spot in the preliminary rounds of the 2024/25 CAF Champions League.
