Sadio Mane converted a first-half penalty to help the Teranga Lions of Senegal edge Cameroon 1-0 in an entertaining international friendly played on Monday evening at the Stade de Bollaert Delelis in Lens.

The Indomitable Lions side were furious after they had a penalty appeal for foul in the Senegalese box turned down and then the referee awarded Senegal a spot-kick in the half hour mark after Oumar Gonzalez inadvertently brought down Khalidou Koulibaly in the box.

On the balance of play, coach Aliou Cisse’s Senegal, were good value for their victory as they dominated the game and had the best scoring opportunities across the 90 minutes.

Sadio Mane put the hosts ahead in Lens in the 35th minute when he converted a penalty won by Khalidou Koulibaly.

The Al Nasr forward netted his first goal against Cameroon, slotting home clinically past Andre Onana.

Senegal had good chances to double their lead, but failed to take them as the game was mostly played in the Cameroon half.

Boulaye Dia had a late chance to put the game to beat but his 88th minute shot came off the woodwork guided by Onana.

Senegal held on and won the game which will keep them high in their morals barely months before their group stage meeting during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The latest defeat is coach Rigobert Song’s seventh in 15 games as coach of the same Cameroon team that lost two games out of 26 under Antonio Conceicao before the arrival of the current staff.

Cameroon will switch its attention to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in November which has reserved appointments with Mauritius at home and Libya away.
