Coach Rigobert Song has justified his selection of Njie Clinton Mua for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Burundi, stating the player’s present form makes him indispensable.
On Tuesday 29 August, Indomitable Lions coach and manager Song announced the list of 24 players selected to face Burundi in Garoua on 12 September in match day 6 of the Côte d’Ivoire 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifier.
The list of players includes a number of comebacks in Clinton Njié, currently with Turkish club Sivasspor. The 30-year-old will be making his return to the Cameroon squad for a major event hasn’t been in the den since missing a penalty during the semi-final game of the 2021 AFCON defeat to Egypt.
His brilliant performances for his club has earned him a recall to the national team.
Coach Song says; “Njié Clinton is one of the most highly-rated strikers at the moment, and he scores every time. I don’t understand why I would do without such a player. I’m the coach, and my aim is to get victory for Cameroonians.”
Although the Cameroon 2021 AFCON episode is still fresh in the mind, the coach is reassuring about the Sivasspor player’s performances:
The speedy striker has scored one goal, provided one assist and made one pre-assist in three starts in the Turkish top flight.
“Clinton Njié is an indispensable resource. Last time he missed a penalty, but this time he’ll score,” Song added.
Njie and Greek based defender Harold Moukoudi returns to the squad.
The return of the former Lyon, Tottenham Hotspur and Olympique de Marseille striker has the potential to improve on his return of 10 goals in 42 appearances for Cameroon.
“We’re aware of what’s at stake,” he said before adding, “the list is very good, bringing together the best current performances from our players,” an assured Song stated as he close the press conference this Tuesday.
The Indomitable Lions need a win to secure their 21st appearance at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations finals.
