Richmond Nji drags Victoria United back into title after crushing Canon

Richmond Nji scored twice while Nathan Douala got the other goal as Victoria United FC of Limbe punished Canon Yaoundé 3-0 on Tuesday in match day five of the MTN Elite One championship playoffs to return to the podium position in the title playoffs with two games left.

The game played out to be a boring stalemate in the first 45 minutes but came to live after the pause with expected star men Nathan and Richmond making the difference.

A quick fire start to the second segment saw the Limbe-based outfit score thrice in under 12 minutes to ensure they obtained their third victory in five outings and move within a point of current leaders Yong Sport Academy of Bamenda.

Golden boot chaser Nji put Opopo ahead seven minutes into the second segment before Nathan won and converted a penalty to make it 2-0 after 56 minutes.

Canon stirring another defeat in the playoffs conceded a third three minutes later as Richmond completed another brace of this campaign.

With the victory sealed and three points almost guaranteed, Victoria United FC managed the pace of the game to their good till the end, letting very few moments of threats for the Kpa Kum.

The final whistle from Harouna Gando sanctioned a third win for OPOPO and a first defeat for coach Jules Abah Onana who was making his debut for Canon after replacing Joseph Atangana per a decision from president Placide Mevoua this week.

The brace makes Richmond the MTN Elite One championship top scorer with 16 goals this season while Jules Armand Kooh, Kache Boris and Nchindo John Bosco are breeding down his neck with almost similar returns.

Victoria United FC who still have Stade Renard of Melong and holders Cotonsport can win the title if they better the results obtained by YOSA in the final two games of the competition.
