Former Cameroon international Patrick Mboma Ndem says the country’s outing at the 34th edition of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte D’Ivoire was a failure.
The two-AFCON winner and former African footballer of the year made the comments during a recent conversation with Alain Denis Ikoul of AfricaFootUnited just after the end of the soccer jamboree which Côte D’Ivoire triumph.
Mboma who is acting as the brand ambassador of the Indomitable Lions these days expressed his disappointment about the output of the current generation of players in the tournament which made him a global brand.
“Cameroon at AFCON 2023? It is between mixed or failure, for me, it’s a failure,” Mboma stated.
“There was only one victory even if it was convincing and then in the 8th, there was no match finish between the two nations.
“Nigeria by it’s power and its application was more superior,” Cameroon’s second goal scorer in the final of the AFCON 2000 tournament in Nigeria concluded.
Cameroon entered AFCON 2023 on the heels of two podium finishes in the past three tournaments and was expected to thrive, at least going by the preaching of its Federation president, Samuel Eto’o Fils.
Unfortunately for the five-time African champions, their campaign ended prematurely in the eighth final after they suffered a 0-2 defeat to eventual runners-up, Nigeria.
The comments from Mboma add him to the long list of experts that have rated Cameroon’s performance as below par.
