Nigerian and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen had been crowned the 2023 African Player of the Year.
He was crowned on Monday December 11, 2023 at the prestigious CAF Awards held in Marrakech, Morocco.
The Napoli star beat out stiff competition from Egyptian and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Morocco and Paris Saint-Germain’s Achraf Hakimi to secure the continent’s most coveted individual honour.
Osimhen was the highest-ranked African player in the 2023 Men’s Ballon d’Or vote, finishing eighth after scoring 26 goals last season to help Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years.
Victor Osimhen also fired Nigeria to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with 10 goals to finish as the top scorer of the qualifiers.
After scoring 27 goals for Napoli last season, the 24-year-old became the first Napoli player to finish top scorer in Italian football since Maradona did so.
Osimhen is now the first Nigerian winner of the men’s award since Kanu Nwankwo in 1999.
This season, Victor Osimhen has scored 6 goals and provided an assist in 11 Serie A matches.
In the women’s category, Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala of FC Barcelona won the Golden Ball for a record sixth time in her career.
Both Osihmen and Oshoala will be the main point of attraction when their country steps out for the men and women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournaments in Côte D’Ivoire and Morocco respectively next year.
