Coach of Nigeria’s D’Tigress, Rena Wakama, has made history by becoming the very first female coach to win the FIBA Afro Basket title since it came into place in 1966 and less than a month after her appointment.

Appointed head coach of the women’s Basketball team in June 2023, the 31-year-old has led Nigerias D’Tigress to winning their 6th Afro Basket title on Sunday, August 6.

Nigeria beat Senegal 83-74 in the final, a remake of the 2017 and 2019 final when both sides met and Nigeria won on the two occasions.

This is their fourth consecutive title, having won it in 2003, 2005, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, to become one of the tournament’s most decorated nations.

Wakama is a former national team player who served as assistant coach at Stony Brooks University, U.S before the appointment with her first major task to defend the tile in Rwanda, in which she did.

She was part of Nigeria’s squad that travelled to Cameroon for the 2015 Women’s Afrobasket competition, where Nigeria finished third and that was her last year with the team.

Known for having a good fashion sense as seen on matchdays, Rena had only a short playing career before deciding to engage in the coaching career and started off at Manhattan College as operations director for women’s basketball and later got promoted as assistant female coach.

She equally is the first lady to coach a Nigerian national team and this for sure will go down the annals of history. Nigeria retains her title, thanks to this great manager.
