  • Djonkep scored his sixth goal of the season to secure the 2-1 win
  • Eding Sport kept their perfect start to the competition by beating their city rivals in the center region derby
  • Francis Koloto’s goal was the only positive for Dragon in the contest as they can boast of one of the league’s top scorers with eight strikes to his credit

Eding Sport of Lekie edged Dragon of Yaounde by 2-1 in a tight center region derby on Thursday to make it two victories in two outings in the 2023/24 MTN Elite Two championship promotion playoffs.

First-half goals from Bienvenu Mbith and Harrison Ford Djonkep for Eding only had one late reply from Dragon’s Francis Koloto in the afternoon which nothing worked for the Cha Cha Boys.

Eding entered the contest hoping to building on their narrow one-nil win against Racing Bafoussam in their opening match of the competition while Dragon with a full squad this time around was hoping to bounce back from their 5-0 defeat against Djiko in match day one.

Though without captain and lead scorer Theophane Ngoundo Eteme, Eding endured a strong start – pushing Dragon deep into their half for most of the opening quarter of the game.

Former Stade Renard of Melong forward Mbith put the 2014 Elite Two champions ahead after 14 minutes, pouncing on loose ball in the box to make it 1-0.

Djonkep doubled the advantage from the penalty spot but Eding Sport conceded a late goal through Koloto which ensured a nail-biting finish to the contest.

Though there was up to seven minutes of additional time, coach Anicet Mbarga Foe’s Eding stood their ground to seal the 2-1 win which also amounts to Dragon Yaoundé’s second defeat of the competition.

Djonkep’s latest goal takes his tally to six this campaign while Koloto’s goal is his eighth this term.

Eding moves to the top of the promotion playoffs table with six points just like Panthere of Nde while Dragon must find form quickest to stand a chance of being amongst contenders for promotion come the end of the season.

Eding Sport have a safe with unbeaten Djiko FC in match day three of the championship while Dragon face fellow winless Racing Bafoussam. All games are scheduled on Monday in Bafoussam and Bandjoun.

The best two teams per points accumulated at the end of the seven-game championship will be promoted to the top-flight to form a 16-club MTN Elite One championship next season.
