Cotonsport of Garoua emerged champions of Cameroon for the third time in a row after defeating 11 time champions, Canon Sportive of Yaoundé 2-0 in the final playoff game of the 2022/23 MTN Elite One football season, thanks to Abdouraman Daman Bouba and Patient Wassou.

Before 24,175 spectators, Wassou and Daman gave Cotonsport her 18th title as champion of Cameroon’s league at the Reunification Stadium in Bepanda, Douala, a game the Kpakum boys failed to convert several chances.

Cotonsport took the lead 25’ into the game through Abdouraman Daman Bouba who took advantage of goalkeeper Mbaynaissem’s blunder to score his second consecutive goal in the playoffs, thanks to Abdouraman Bouba.

Canon missed a glearing chance to have taken the lead after Tombi Francis’s shot at goal from a corner kick was saved by Allambatnan.

The Kpakum boys got at least four corner kicks in the first half and three during the first 13 minutes, but Junior Stephane’s crosses were poorly taken and the opponent’s goalkeeper was attentive enough to make some crucial saves.

Allambatnan equally denied Emmanuel Mahopp’s chance of getting the equalizer after the latter’s header went right into the waiting hands of the goalpost guard.

Taking a 1-0 lead for the break and back, the Cotonites tightened defense and mounted pressure hoping for a second goal. Alain Moukoko and the team at the backline denied their chances but the wasteful Canon attackers failed to get the equalizer.

Nine minutes to the end of regular time, Patient Wassou who has been considered to be the “sleeping dog” since the start of the playoff, woke up from slumber with the second goal 10 minutes from time.

At this point in time, it was more than over for the Kpakum boys whose efforts during the last minutes yielded no fruits.

They needed a win with at least two goals to challenge the holders but their energy on the pitch in this encounter was evident they will be hard to try harder next season.

Canon who came into this stage are now second runners-up for this football season as Bamboutos goes ahead of them to clinch the bronze Medal

Cotonsport puts a cap to this football season as champion of Cameroon and of course, Cameroon’s representative in the CAF Champions League.

They back home 50 million CFA as cash prize while Bamboutos FC gets 25 millions FCFA for finishing second. Canon backs home 15 millions and Gazelle FA in fourth gets 10 millions FCFA.
