MTN Elite One playoffs: Aziz Bessane scores screamer as Coton beat Canon 2-0 to move top

MacGregor Veraloh and Aziz Bessane were the heroes this Sunday as Cotonsport of Garoua beat Canon 2-0 this Sunday to gain the status of temporal leaders of the MTN Elite One championship title playoffs.

Goals in extreme moments of the game from MacGregor just before the break and a screamer from Aziz just before added time assured a second win for coach Daniel Breard’s team and most-importantly took them ahead of YOSA and Victoria United FC before their meeting on Monday.

Canon Yaoundé struggles throughout the playoffs heightened from the start of the game as they defended in the best part of the opening half hour, sucking up pressure from the defending champions.

Canon largely dominated the first half with goals attempts from Paul Henri Tchikeu, Guy Serge Edoa . The only concrete chance Coton had was the corner taken by Benjamin Bieleu and headed in by Veraloh.

Veraloh rewarded the 18-time champions when he beat Jourdhain Mbaiynassem to ensure they take a one-goal lead to the break.

And the ten-time Cameroon champions were almost punished just after resumption when Wassou Goue received a well-worked ball into the box, used his trickery to create space and hit a shot which Canon were relieved to see crash into the side-netting.

Cotonsport squandered a number of chances to make the points safe until the moment of the Aziz Bessane magic.

Bessane scored a screamer the 89th minutes to secure all three points which takes the tally of the Garoua giants to seven from a possible nine.

The game finished 2-0 to mark another clean sheet for Lako Merlin and his mates.

Cotonsport are trying to retain the Cameroon title after winning it last season for the past three seasons.

Cotonsport have been similarly dominant this year and, with four rounds of games left after this weekend, look to be in a strong position though YOSA and Victoria United look like serious contenders.

Cotonsport players will keenly follow the anglophone derby clash of YOSA and Victoria United FC on Monday as it is an early title decider.
