The Atlas Lions of Morocco have won the 2024 Futsal Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). They made it a third triumph in a row, following a 5-1 success against Angola this Sunday.
The mouthwatering encounter at the packed Salle Palais des SPO in Rabat lived up to its billing with the energy especially from the home fans playing a telling role for the Moroccan national team.
Goals from Soufiane Borite, Idrissa Raiss El Fenni, captain Soufiane El Mesrar, Anas El and Billal Bekkali reduced Aderito Santos’ effort for Angola to a consolation.
The 2016 and 2020 champions endured a slow start to the encounter with Angola making their first appearance in the final being very organized and enterprising.
Hicham Dguig’s Morocco drew first blood midway into the first segment through Borite. The goal set the tone for a great night. Despite the equalizer from Santos, Angola were outplayed and outscored.
Morocco established a comfortable 3-1 advantage before the pause courtesy goals from Idrissa and skipper El Mesrar.
Second-half goals from Anas El who also hit the post twice and Billal Bekkali ensured it was a comprehensive win for the North African giants.
The game finished 5-1 in favor of Morocco who become only the second nation after Egypt to win the trophy in three successive editions.
Morocco’s third title pits them in the same school of most successful nations as Egypt who also have three titles to their credit as well.
The Atlas Lions will travel to Uzbekistan for the Futsal World Cup in September and October this year as African champions, expected to showcase the know-how of the continent alongside 2024 AFCON runners-up Angola and Bronze medalist Libya.
As it’s been the case in the past decade Morocco via this 7th edition of the Futsal AFCON tournament has displayed its capacity to deliver beyond expectation whenever they are tasked to host sporting events.
