Manchester United stunned Liverpool at Anfield to claim a dramatic 2-1 victory — their first league win on Merseyside in nine years — as Bryan Mbeumo struck early before Harry Maguire’s late header sealed a famous result.
United could hardly have asked for a better start. Barely 70 seconds had passed when Mbeumo pounced on a loose ball after Alexis Mac Allister went down under a challenge. The visitors broke quickly through Amad Diallo, whose clever pass found the Cameroonian forward. Mbeumo drove into the box and coolly slotted past Giorgi Mamardashvili to silence the Kop.
Liverpool responded with their trademark intensity. Cody Gakpo, starting in attack, twice went close, including one curling strike that clipped the post. United were pinned deep for long stretches, but their defence — marshalled by Maguire and Lisandro Martínez — held firm, while André Onana produced a strong save to deny Federico Chiesa.
After the interval, Liverpool continued to dominate possession and territory. Gakpo saw another effort come off the frame of the goal before finally finding the equaliser on 78 minutes, turning home Chiesa’s low cross at the near post to make it 1-1. The home side looked poised to press for a winner, but United had other ideas.
With six minutes remaining, Bruno Fernandes swung in a teasing free-kick from the right, and Maguire rose highest to glance a superb header beyond Mamardashvili. The goal sent the away fans into raptures and proved decisive despite a frantic late push from Liverpool.
The victory marked Rúben Amorim’s biggest moment yet as United manager, lifting his side back into the top four and ending a barren run at Anfield stretching back to 2016. Liverpool, meanwhile, were left to rue a fourth straight defeat in all competitions and three efforts from Gakpo that struck the woodwork.
Mbeumo’s early strike set the tone and his tireless work rate epitomised United’s disciplined display. Maguire’s late header provided the finishing touch to a gritty, determined performance that reignites United’s campaign — and delivers a statement win against their fiercest rivals.
