Coach Amir Abdou has guided Mauritania to their first ever qualification to the quarter-final of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) following their 1-0 win over last edition’s finalist Mali in a tight contest at the Oran Olympic stadium this Tuesday in the last Group D fixture.

Mamadou Sy scored the lone goal six minutes into the second segment to put the Morabitones ahead in a move Germain Berthe on goal for Mali should have done better.

That goal proved to be a wake up call for coach Nouhoum Diane’s side as the Malians improved after conceding, creating a number of goal scoring opportunities but unfortunately failed to find the back of the net.

Though the best chances of the final half hour of the game fell to the Malians, Mauritania held on to win the game which takes their points tally to four and into a first quarter-final against Senegal who won Group B.

Mauritania will travel to Annaba this Wednesday morning to start preparations for the all West Africa quarter final showdown at the 19 May 1956 stadium in Annaba, Algeria which is scheduled for 5PM local time and will be a first CHAN meeting between both nations.
