Kahzri on target as Tunisia beat World champs for nothing

Tunisia are out from the 2022 FIFA World Cup despite their shocking 1-0 win over World champions, France in their final group game at the Education City Stadium.

A victory that will mean plenty to the Tunisian squad and their fans, even it is ultimately where their short 2022 World Cup journey ends.

Khazri’s goal, the first of the tournament for the North African nation was not enough to see them joining Senegal in the last 16.

The French-born Tunisian player steered home a 58th minute winner amid a cluster of defenders for only a third victory at six World Cup appearances for Tunisia.

France, who made nine changes for this match from the team that beat Denmark and had already booked their place in the knockout stages, finished top of Group D on goal difference from runners-up Australia, who beat Denmark 1-0 at the same time.

Les Bleus thought they had equalised through Antoine Griezmann in the 98th minute but a much-delayed VAR review ruled it out for offside as the north Africans held on for an historic win. France now take on the runners- up in Group C, which will be concluded later on Wednesday.

However, the Eagles of Carthage will not progress to the last 16 due to Australia’s victory over Denmark in Group D’s other final fixture but will take solace from this upset against the 2018 champions.

Their elimination means Senegal still remains the only African side to qualify for the knockout stage but Ghana, Morocco, and Cameroon are still having the chance to progress.

Ghana will have to draw or beat Uruguay on Friday to join Portugal from Group H while Cameroon face Brazil in a difficult encounter in Group G.

Elsewhere, Mororco must claim win or draw against Canada on Thursday depending on the result from the clash between Croatia and Belgium in Group F to qualify.
