Goalkeeper Devis Epassy Mboka was one of the Cameroonian stars that shone brightest in Qatar during the 2022 fifa World Cup.
I remember shortly before the game against Brazil, we were so panicky from the commentary boot, my colleagues and I. My right hand shivered so terribly with the microphone as my technician Armand Mbaba turned towards me in his desperate effort to instill confidence and hope in me. “These young boys can create a surprise”, he told me so reassuringly. But deep in me, I knew Mbaba wasn’t too confident, himself. 😂
And then the match starts. 13 minutes on, Brazil’s Martinelli unleashes a powerful headed shot from the edge of the 6 yard area. Devis Epassy Mboka stretches his ribcage and puts the ball just inches over the cross bar. “That was absolutely acrobatic”, my voice came out with a mixture of fear and relief. That was supposed to be a goal. Look at the save in this photo. “What a savvvvvvve”, I cried out from the commentary boot as confidence began oozing.
And then Martinelli again with another powerful right-footed shot, and then Epassy effortlessly scoops it over the crossover. Martinelli (Arsenal) was such a constant threat to Epassy. He had his 3 dangerous moves stopped by the Cameroon goalkeeper.
Mark you, this was the save that brought hope and instilled confidence in our boys. Epassy made 7 terrific saves that were clean potential goals. His indestructible performance throughout the contest inspired confidence in the young lion squad. Hence, there were several revelations notably Christopher Wooh and Enzoh Ebossé.
Thanks to his solid performance, goalkeeper Devis Epassy Mboka was voted man of the match against the Almighty Brazil. He became only the first African goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet against the Seleçaos.
Epassy introduced himself to the World in Qatar, but mind you, he was already in the limelight since 2021 with the lions. He was between the sticks for a majority of the World cup qualifiers as André Onana was serving a fifa ban.
At a time when Onana is in a blistering form with Inter, it is hoped that Epassy will continue to replicate his World Cup performances for Cameroon.
