Cameroon defender Yvan Dibango was part of history on Wednesday night as LASK Linz secured their first-ever UEFA Champions League victory, stunning Sporting CP 3-2 away from home in Lisbon.
Dibango started and completed the entire match at the Estádio José Alvalade as the Austrian side produced a memorable comeback. The victory marked a major breakthrough for LASK after defeats to AEK Athens and Liverpool in their opening European fixtures.
Sporting took an early lead through Luis Suárez, who converted a fifth-minute penalty, but LASK responded quickly. Christoph Lang equalised in the 15th minute before the visitors took control after the break. Sasa Kalajdzic put LASK ahead in the 63rd minute, before Krystof Danek extended their advantage five minutes later.
Dibango was involved in the build-up to LASK’s third goal, passing to Samuel Adeniran, who then set up Danek to score in the 68th minute. The Cameroonian did not register an official assist, but his involvement helped create the decisive opportunity. Suárez scored again in the 89th minute to set up a tense finish, but LASK held on to secure a historic 3-2 victory.
The result gives Dibango and his teammates a significant boost in their Champions League campaign. For the Cameroonian defender, completing the full match on such a landmark European night adds another memorable chapter to his career abroad.
