The coach of The Gambia national team, Tom Saintfliet, has announced that the match against Cameroon was his last as head coach of the team.
Cameroon defeated The Gambia 3#2 in their last group match to seal a place in the round of 16 in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire.
“This was my last match as coach of Gambia. My contract expires in August 2026, but I step down”, coach Tom Saintfliet told the press after the match.
He appreciated The Gambia Football Association and his staff for the conducive environment in which he worked.
“Thanks to the FA and my staff, I am forever a Gambian. My daughter is 7, and when I told her I’ll resign, she was not happy. But I believe this is the time”, Tom Saintfliet said.
Saintfiet was appointed manager of The Gambian national team on July 18, 2018. He made his debut in a 1#1 draw against Algeria.
On March 25, 2021, Saintfiet made history with Gambia by qualifying the country for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time ever with a 1#0 victory over Angola in Bakau while also finishing as the top team in Group D.
Gambia joined the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations as the lowest-ranked team of the tournament as well as the lowest-ranked team ever to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations. They debuted with a 1#0 win over Mauritania followed by a 1#1 draw to Mali. Gambia qualified for the round of 16 with a game to spare and on 20 January defeated Tunisia 1#0 in their final group match.
Under Tom Saintfliet, Gambia advanced to the quarter finals of the AFCON in Cameroon after defeated Guinea but were eliminated by Cameroon in the quarter finals.
