Racing Club of Abidjan and Ivorian defender Sylla Moustapha died in hospital, hours after collapsing during a league match against Sol FC.
The 21-year-old fell to the floor in the 70th minute without contact. The match was abandoned after the incident. Local media reported that he suffered a heart attack per information from the club president Cissé Souleymane.
A statement on Racing’s official Twitter handle read: “Death!! Our defender Sylla Moustapha died this evening after a discomfort during our game against Sol FC. Our management sends sincere condolences to the biological family.Rest in Peace Moustapha.Rest in Peace Lion.”
Moustapha was taken by ambulance to the nearby Emergency Hospital, which was swiftly surrounded by football fans desperate for news of a player who joined the club from Djoliba AC and was making his seventh league appearance.
He had started making a name for himself before this tradegy struck.
He had received a number of pre-selections to different national teams but wasn’t a fully established international for his country.
