The Cameroonian football community is in mourning following the killing of referee Agbor Peter Agbor, who was shot dead while officiating a football match in Manyu Division of the South West Region on Sunday.
Agbor Peter Agbor, a native of Nchang Village and a member of the Manyu Referees Association, was attacked in Ajah, Eyumojock Subdivision, during a community football tournament. According to reports, armed men identified as Ambazonia separatist fighters stormed the match venue and opened fire, fatally wounding the referee as the game was in progress.
The attack also resulted in the abduction of the two assistant referees, who were taken to an unknown destination. Their whereabouts remain unknown as of the time of publication.
The incident abruptly brought the football match to an end, sending players, officials and spectators fleeing for safety.
Agbor Peter Agbor’s death has sent shockwaves through Cameroon’s refereeing fraternity and the wider football community. His killing underscores the security risks faced by civilians in parts of the country’s English-speaking regions, where years of armed conflict have repeatedly disrupted everyday life, including sporting activities.
Authorities had not yet released an official statement on the attack or the kidnapping of the assistant referees at the time of publication. Investigations are expected to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and support efforts to secure the safe release of those abducted.
